MY FATHER GAVE MY GRADUATION INVITATION TO MY STEPSISTER AND SHOVED ME INTO THE RAIN
MY FATHER GAVE MY GRADUATION INVITATION TO MY STEPSISTER AND SHOVED ME INTO THE RAIN — “YOU’RE ONE CADET OUT OF FOUR HUNDRED. NOBODY’S GOING TO NOTICE.”
HE HAD NO IDEA I WAS FIRST IN MY CLASS, HAD THE MEDAL, AND WAS ABOUT TO GIVE THE ADDRESS.
Chapter 1: The Ticket He Gave Away
My father gave my only graduation invitation to my stepsister and shoved me away from the entrance in the rain — he had no idea I was giving the address.
My name is Kade. The night before my graduation, I handed my father the one gold family ticket and asked him to come. He looked at it for a second and passed it to my stepsister. “She’s family.” My stepmother started listing the important people her daughter could meet.
He laughed at me. “You’re one cadet out of four hundred. Nobody’s going to notice.”
He didn’t know I was first in my class, that I had the medal, that I was giving the address — because I’d stopped telling that family anything at sixteen, when I learned they never retained it.
The next morning, in the rain, my father put himself between me and the doors, took my arm, called me an embarrassment, and shoved me backward while the three of them went inside.
Then an umbrella appeared. The commandant. “You’re the reason half these officers came.” He saw my arm, saw my stepsister posing with my invitation inside. “Come with me. You’re not using the guest entrance.”
Minutes later I stood backstage in full dress uniform, while my father sat in the row he’d stolen, with no idea whose name he was about to hear.
